Bilateral relations between China and Australia have strengthened greatly in recent years .This growth was exemplified by the celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of relations between China and Australia in 2002 and by the very successful visit to Australia of President Hu Jintao in October 2003.The warmth and vibrancy of our bilateral relations was evident during my recent to Beijing ,during which Premier Wen Jiabao and I announced that Australia and China would commence negotiations towards a bilateral Free Trade Agreement.
People-to-people links also continue to develop rapidly and contribute to mutual understanding and respect. Australia and China have an excellent programme of high-level visits and regular cultural, scientific, legal, educational and defence exchanges. These exchanges are the foundation of our strong relationship.
The Chinese community has been instrumental in Australia’s development .It has helped develop bonds between the people of Australia and China and has made vital contributions in all areas of life in Australia, including government, business and the arts.
I hope that everyone participating in the Australian tour will find it a rewarding experience.
