MOGAO
GROTTO AT DUNHUANG
The Mogao
Grotto is located at the eastern foot of Mingsha Mountain.25km
southeast to Dunhuang city in Gansu province. It is located at
the west. facing the east in front of the Sanweishan Mountain
and Daquanhe River.The grottoes are divided into five layers with
a total length of 1.618 meters, Mogao Grotto is also known as
Qianfodong,〝the eaves of 1,000 shrines of for Buddhas〞.It was
first created in 366 AD, constructed through ten dynasty More
than 1,000 shires of for Buddha caves had already existed during
the Tang Dynasty. Due to force majeure and artificial sabotages,
there ate only 492 caves left today, together with 45,000 sq .m.
fullof exquisite frescoes and more than 3,000 painted sculptures,
and five wooden structures built during the Tang and Song Dynasty.
It is the world′s largest scale and best kept Buddhist artistic
treasure vault. The Mogao Grotto at Dunhuang was listed by the
State Council as a major national protected unit of cultural relics
in 1961.In 1987,the UNESCO included it as a protected unit of
human cultural heritage.

YUEYAQUANSPRING
Five kilometers from Dunhuang, surrounded
by the Mingshanshan Mountain is a spring shaped like a new moon.
It is called Yueyaquan(〝New Moon Spring〞literally).It measures 220m
from east to west in length, with varied distances from south to
north in width. The widest area is more than 20m,and is about two
meters deep. The Spring is surrounded by sands, but the water is
clear all the time and never runs dry, surviving a thousand years
a sandstorms. The Spring water is as clear as a mirror, so to speak.

The Flying Figures in Mogao Grotto
at Dunhuang Caves are ones of the best loved images of art. These
Flying Figures are the combination of the Tiang'eshen(〝Gods of
Heavenly Music〞).They have been the creations of ancient Chinese
artists who combined the essence of cultures from India, the Western
Region and China, integrating the〝heavenly humans〞in the Indian
Buddhism Chinese Taoism, and the flying people of the West and
the Central Plains turned into ones with the Chinese characteristics
Flying Figures can be found in almost every cave in Dunhuang,
totaling about 4,500 of all. These Flying Figures display different
artistic styles and features as time goes by. Their gracefully
slender figures have attracted worldwide attention. |
